The type of cloth diapers that come to mind for many people are prefolds. They are the diapers that are a rectangular shape and you fold them to fit the baby.

Prefolds can be made with several different materials. Cotton is the most common. Hemp, rayon with bamboo, organic cotton, and flannel are some other materials that you may find. My personal favorite are Hemp for their absorbency and rayon for the super softness. Long lasting materials include Indian cotton, hemp and organic cotton.

There are several ways to fold a prefold. There is the bikini twist, jelly roll, and angel wing. Each fold serves a different purpose. If your baby is a newborn or has runny poo the jelly roll fold is the way to go. For many older girls the bikini twist puts the most absorbency where she needs it most.

The angel wing is one of the most commonly known folds. To fold the angel wing lay out the diaper flat. Take the bottom and fold it up a few inches (or how much to fit your baby’s rise), fold each bottom corner toward the middle. Place the baby on the diaper fold the middle up over the baby and take the top corners and fold over, pin or secure with a snappi.

Bikini twist is a simple fold and used most commonly with girls. Simply hold one end of the diaper in each hand then twist. Place the baby down and pin or fasten with a snappi.

The jelly roll will keep messes inside the diaper better than the traditional angel wing fold. Lay the diaper flat, starting at one bottom corner roll the edge until you reach the middle. Do the same with the opposite side. Fold over to create the correct rise and then fasten with pins or a snappi.

Prefolds can seem very intimidating but with a little practice you will be using them with ease.

When I was pregnant I saw all these lovely nappies/diapers and was a amazed by them. I spoke to Keith my partner about them, he wasn’t up for it. I still went ahead and looked into it and worked out we could save money, would be better for the planet. Anyway I was told it would be far to much work and a waste of money. I could not help it but look up real nappies all the time. It was not until Emily my daughter was 5 months old when I went back into it. I went to mothercare looking for some advise and no one was there to help, so I came back out with a trail nappy. Was not the best nappy but it was a start. Then I remember my uncle use real nappies on there first son, so I asked if they still had them and if so could I try them. Again not that great of nappies had leaks and very slow drying. They were kushies nappies aio(all in one) which mean has a built in waterproof layer. I ended up talking to a few people that reused real nappies and was recommend to speak to a lollipop nappy adviser. With things I had a look on there website and sent in a request to have some help me chose the right nappy for me, my daughter and our lifestyle. A few days later I had a call from a lovely adviser and she was really helpfully. We ended up going for a 2 part system, a 2 part system is a nappy with no waterproof layer and commonly known as fitted or shaped nappies, these nappies require a outer cover also known as a wrap. So we went with 20 cream micro nappies and 6 wraps. The reason I wanted these nappies as they were quick drying and the wrap did not need change every time it could be reused several times and easily wiped clean. I also order 2 softee nappies which is really fluffy and super soft nappies and great for nights and heavy wetter and again quick to dry. I got a wetbag too so I could use my nappies while out and about. I believe with reusable nappies we have saved around £1250, I do believe we could have saved alot more if we started with real nappies.

And who ever said it was hard work was lying, it is not hard work I do 2 extra loads of washing a week. All you have to do is put a nappy on put the dirty on in the pale where you have mess bag and once it is full use the bag to put your nappies in the washing machine. Close the door put your powder in and nappy sansitser. Which on and wash at 40. Later take nappies out hang out to dry once dry put away.

I do not find it harder to change using real nappies infact I find it easier. And if you do want an easy and simply change go for a pocket nappy.

Reusing is easy, it is cheap, it is better for your baby’s bum and better for our planet.

Hello everyone

I had been thinking about making my own nappies/diapers for a while. I use them on my daughter and love them, I have far too many for Emily once you buy one you can not stop. I use fitted nappies, nappies that require a waterproof wrap, fleece wrap or wool as in knitted. I also have birth to potty (BTP) nappies also known as onesize nappies, some may require a wrap and others have a waterproof layer built in. There is also a lot of choice of nappies.

I work as real nappy adviser for lollipop children’s products ltd.

I love the nappies they have. Emily my daughter skin is easily effected and make’s it hard to buy nappies for her. We mainly use fitted nappies and use wool over the top. I can not knit but I can sew. With this problem and the fact when you have a wriggly baby some times getting a nappy on can be a chore. I put my thinking cap on to come up with an idea for a new nappy. I thought and thought about it, maybe I could use bamboo or maybe cotton. At the time of me trying to think of what material my nappy should be made of. I was getting Emily some custom made wool soakers, wool longies(trouser), and crops from www.Knitterarty.co.uk

I had been speaking to the lady who was knitting for me and she was a great help. I then went looking for material and prices from different shops and came back with black fleece material.

So I got down to business first with cutting the material in 50 by 50 cm I got 5 cuts enough to make one nappy and a pack of a second nappy. Then I use a nappy that I had for a template to get the shape of the legs and an idea for the sides of the nappy. I cut out the first part of the nappy and used it for the second part and then cut it out to. I then moved onto the elastic for giving the nappy some stretch and fit for longer. I came into problems with this part and having no pins, to pin the elastic in place I tried a few different ways and had no luck. I want to have E for Emily on the back of my nappies, silly me use red thread for sewing with. So it is not easy to see. So for next week I will have to buy some pins and embordary thread to countine with the nappy.

The second items I am working on is 2 white cotton tots bots nappies. They are here to be dyed ocean blue for a friend, this will be my second lot of nappies to dye. I started off with dyeing my own nappies pink and they turned out well.

The plan is for 1 nappy to be solid blue
and the other to be different shades of blue, I will be dyeing these later and will post a pictures of the nappies being dyed and once they are finished.

Hello everyone, I’m so excited to be writing for bumps n babies. I’m Rachel a wife and work at home mom of three wonderful little boys. I own Sweet Infant an online baby store. I love talking about babies, children, and motherhood. I look forward to sharing stories, insights and reviews with everyone.

My current love in the baby world (other than my 19 month old son) is cloth diapers. You will probably see many of my posts being about cloth diapers, how and why to use them, and some reviews. Cloth diapers have broaden my horizons to many other wonderful eco baby items. I’m looking forward to sharing my finds with you.

My store Sweet Infant is mainly a cloth diaper store. I became so passionate about cloth diapers that I decided to sell them and share the passion with others. I also carry baby carriers such as ring slings and wraps. The newest addition to Sweet Infant are the organic products.

In the days to come you will find out that I’m just like every mother out there. I want the absolute best for my children, I want to be the best mother I can be, and it seems that I am on the go all the time. I look forward to sharing my adventures in motherhood with you.

Weaning your baby onto solids

When should you wean your baby?
It is recommended to start weaning at around six months old.
Over the years more research has been done in relation to weaning. There is more evidence to support why weaning your baby early can have an effect on their health.

If you feel your baby needs more than milk before six months old please contact your health visitor or doctor on advice, before starting to weaning. Weaning should not start before 17 weeks(four months old).

Why wait until six months old?

Feeding your baby solids before he or she is ready to cope with them could increase the risk of allergies and increase the risk of infection.
At six months old your baby is more likely to be ready for solids, as at this stage most babies can either sit with support or unaided. Head control is very important as if a baby doesn’t have head control there is a high risk of choking. Babies immune system and digestive system should be stronger able to cope with solids. They also may show interest in food.

Most babies will be happy and satisfied with milk until six months old. If you feel your baby is ready and no longer satisfied with just milk then contact your health visitor or doctor.
Things to help try putting your baby off weaning for a while longer.
1.Change their milk to an extra hunger formula. If you breast feed you can try feeding you baby more.
2.Give cooled boiled water preferable in a training cup. In between feeds
3.Increase the amount of milk your baby is taking.
4.If bottle feeding you could try adding an extra bottle of milk in a 24 hour period.

Other things to consider before weaning if your baby is under six months old.
1.If your baby is waking at night and before had been sleeping through the night. Could your baby be unwell?
2.Could your baby being going through a grow spurt?
3.Could your baby be teething?
4.Could your baby be thirty and not hungry?
Again always contacted your health visitor or doctor is you have concerns over your baby’s health.

You maybe find some information is misleading about signs of your baby needing weaned.
Some information that could confuse you into thinking your baby is ready for weaning.
1.Can your baby sit with support. Well most baby’s can by 3 months old. Doesn’t mean your baby is ready.
2.Your baby is chewing your their hands. Some babies do this from birth as it can be a comforting thing for babies. Other reason your baby could be chewing and sucking on their hands, could be because they are teething.
3.Showing interest in what you are eating. Some babies are very alert and will what watch anything you do and if your eating they do learn by what you do. Does not mean they are ready to wean.
4.Your baby is reaching out for what your eating. Most babies at 4 months old are reaching out for anything the have in their eye sight. You can put them on a play mat and the will reach to play with the toys.
5.Is your baby putting things in their mouth? Yes. Does it mean they are ready for weaning? No. Babies explore using the hands and mouth.

If your considering weaning your baby before six months old, contact your health visitor or doctor for further advice. Babies under four months (17weeks) old should not be given solids. You need to read and know facts about weaning before thinking about it. Please don’t put your baby at harm. Always do your research first.

My name is Hannah Will and I am a lollipop adviser.

Why choose real nappies?

The Environment
In the UK, between 8 and 9 million disposable nappies are thrown away every day, amounting to 4% of UK waste. An amazing statistic. The plastic and chemical components of disposable nappies can take up to 500 years to fully decompose (2), leaving a frightening legacy for our children. Landfill sites are a limited and unsustainable solution to waste in the longer term. The current total cost to the British council taxpayer for the collecting, transporting and dumping of disposables into landfill is estimated at £40 million every year.(3)
What is more, disposable nappy waste contains urine and faeces, and dumping human waste in the dustbin is against World Health Organisation guidelines. This mix of bacteria and viruses (including live polio virus following vaccination) end up in landfill sites around the country. A recent
report published in The Lancet which was led by The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine has found that people living within two miles of a hazardous landfill site (note that not all are classed as such) are 40% more likely to have babies with birth defects, miscarriages or still births.

Health
Conventional disposables contain suberabsorbant gels which create that ‘stay dry’ layer. These gels are non-biological in origin and are non-biodegradable. Questions have also been raised about their effect on babies particularly during extended use such as overnight. Some Mums report finding gel on their babies bottoms in the morning. Furthermore, in the past, a Greenpeace report (1) highlighted the presence of the ‘gender bender’ chemical tributyl-tin (TBT) in a number of leading disposable brands. A concentration of TBT was found in Pampers Baby Dry Mini amounting to 38.4 micrograms of TBT per kilogram. Although the amounts were tiny, campaigners claimed that babies could be in contact with 3.6 times the tolerable daily intake recommended by the World Health Organisation. TBT is a toxic chemical which is a stabiliser in plastic production. An oestrogen mimic, that has been implicated in causing sex changes in shellfish, it can harm people’s immune systems and impair their hormonal and sexual systems. The Association of Germany’s Baby doctors now advises parents not to purchase nappies contaminated with TBT and the German government is considering a ban on organotin compounds. TBT is being progressively banned around the world. The Absorbent Hygiene Manufacturer’s Products Association (AHMPA) retaliated by claiming that TBT is contained in washable nappies and that many plastic fabrics such as those used in wraps were found to contain TBT. However, the AHMPA used different tests to Greenpeace using differing acceptable levels. It is encouraging to note, however, that disposable manufacturers have been working to eliminate TBT from their products, and levels are now considered ‘safe’ by government standards. In the meantime, many parents
are choosing to use cloth nappies and breathable plastic or wool wraps, as most disposable nappies are almost 75% plastic. Yet another report has linked the gas releases from disposable nappies with respiratory diseases such
as asthma.

Cost.
the Guardian in February 2006. It quotes a study which indicated that once baby wipes and nappy sacs are included, parents can expect to spend up to £1884 on nappies over the 2.5 years the average baby is in nappies.

You’ve spent nine months anticipating the arrival of a new baby and now they’re here. Congratulations! Along with your new baby come some pretty big responsibilities. One of those being finding a good, quality daycare that you can trust and enjoy.
The most important part of finding a quality daycare is finding a provider you totally trust, but a provider that you can also get along with on a social level. And although this is the most important issue, it’s not the first step for finding a daycare.

The first step for finding a daycare is to look into availability in your area. You need to find as many daycares in your area as you can that take infants into their care, fit the hours you will need, fit within your financial budget and any other wishes of a daycare you may have. Sources for finding daycare openings may include recommendations from friends or family, newspaper ads, internet, public community boards and yard signs. Make a list of all possibilities.

After you get a list compiled, it’s time to do some investigating by using your telephone. You can save valuable time by asking questions on the phone to determine for certain whether the daycare would fit your needs. If you call a daycare, you may find out their hours are not going to meet your needs or that they are not located convenient with your commute and you can delete them from your list. But aside from the basic information, you can gain insightful information about the daycare provider with this telephone call. Pay attention to how professionally she handles the phone call. Was she friendly? If your call was during daycare hours, was she able to maintain control of the children while on the phone? Did you feel some kind of connection? If you can answer yes to these questions, your next step is to schedule a personal interview.

Before you go to your personal interview, prepare a list of questions to cover all issues important to you. Some of your questions will get answered by the provider as she presents her daycare to you and gives you a tour of her home, but by having a list prepared you’ll be sure to remember other topics to cover.

Some daycare providers like holding their interviews during their normal business hours. Others prefer to hold interviews after hours. If you choose to interview with a daycare provider after hours, be sure to also set up a separate appointment in which you can visit the daycare just to observe the provider interacting with the children. It should be considered mandatory for parents to watch the daycare provider interact with children.

After personal interviews with all possible providers, it’s time to make your final decision. The daycare provider you choose for your new infant has a big responsibility in just a short time. With just a phone interview and an hour long personal interview she has to show you she is professional, friendly and able to earn your trust to care for your brand new infant.

Yoga for Pregnancy

What is Yoga for Pregnancy?

Yoga is an ancient form of exercise that involves stretching the body in partnership with the breath and the forces of gravity. It stretches, balances and strengthens the body, calms the mind, relaxes you, and helps the correct alignment of spine and pelvis. In Yoga for Pregnancy we tailor the yoga postures to specifically accommodate the needs of your pregnant body. Yoga practice now can help you later in pregnancy and labour. This yoga is specifically developed for pregnant women and very safe.

What Happens in Class?

We mostly follow gentle, easy postures, sometimes stronger ones. We use yoga belts and yoga balls to vary what we do. In each class we do work as partner pairs (often with massage and stretching) and we discuss many aspects of labour and birth to increase your knowledge and understanding. We always stop for a cup of tea and a biscuit which gives us time for a chat and sometimes we might have a guest speaker eg a new mum bringing her baby to show us and to share her birth experience with the class, or we pick a topic for further discussion. Each class is one and a half hours long. This social aspect of the class is very important and helps you make friends and create bonds with other women who are due to have babies at the same time as you and who live in the area.

Who Cannot Do Yoga for Pregnancy?

As a general rule this form of yoga is suitable for almost everyone so long as you are 14 weeks pregnant or more when you start. This is a strict rule as women can be very tired/nauseous in the first couple of months and it is better to give yoga/other exercise a rest until this time. I consider each person individually and provide guidance if I feel that yoga is not going to be suitable for you based on pre-existing medical conditions/other factors. At all times the safety of you and your baby is my top priority and I will not take anyone into a class if I feel that the risks outweigh the benefits. If necessary I would work as a team with you and your pregnancy health providers to reach such a decision. If you have had a bleed I would discuss this with you and would require written permission to do the yoga from your GP or midwife.

What Do I Need?

You need comfortable clothing that has a bit of stretch in it so that movement is not restricted. There is no need to go out and buy special sports/fitness clothing unless you specifically want to. It is best to avoid clothing with lots of buttons and zips as these can dig into you during the postures. We work with bare feet in yoga so that we can feel the ground properly with our feet. For the last part of class we do a relaxation session so you may wish to bring a warm jumper and socks. Snuggly blankets are provided. You can borrow a mat and ball for the first class but you should definitely purchase your own non-slip mat for the second class onwards.

What About My Health?

As your pregnancy progresses you may suffer from variety of symptoms – mostly very mild but sometimes more serious – the important thing is to keep me updated of your health as this allows me to modify a posture if that will make it better for you. I am here to support you and to ensure you get the best from your yoga classes – not just the physical issues but any emotional worries you have regarding your pregnancy as well. The classes are a supportive and nurturing environment for you as a pregnant woman and entirely tailored to your needs at this time.
