Ready for Birth Couples Workshop
What Is It?
This is a workshop where we can include our birth partners. We can cover, in depth, the topic of labour and birth. This class teaches you about normal birth – what that is, how birth works, hospital procedures such as augmentation of labour and induction, pros and cons of different methods of pain relief, positions for labour, and so on. All of this is done with a keen eye to the principles of Active Birth which honours and respects human birth – an elegant, highly practical and efficient system.
What is Active Birth?
Active Birth is not a fad or a trend. What it does is help women and their partners to understand what is normal in birth and how to work within how our bodies are designed for that. It uses upright labour positions that utilise gravity and it recognises the need for quiet, calm and warmth for the birthing woman. It also means that the woman is not only physically active and mobile during her labour, but that she is educated about birth and taking an active part in the decisions she makes with her midwife, from an informed viewpoint.
What Else Does the Class Cover?
The class also provides a full explanation of the hormonal systems of labour. Understanding these hormones and the changing effects they have on the woman during labour is very important to unlocking the fear and mystery that surrounds birth. During labour women’s emotions can change from elation, fear, a feeling of not being able to go on and aggression, all of which can be very worrying both for the woman to experience and the birth partner to observe, if you don’t understand that they are normal and part of normal birth.
Increasing your understanding and reducing the fear and mystery around birth gives you confidence and power over your birth, as a woman and as a partnership with your birth partner – and this leads to your chances of having a normal, happy birth experience increasing.
When Are They?
Classes are run about every 6 weeks or so subject to demand. Exact dates are agreed in class. The classes run on a Saturday morning at Fitness Works gym usually starting around 10.30 am and lasting approximately 3 hours. They are open to the woman, her partner and any additional birth partners as well. A light lunch and refreshments are included. The class is very friendly and both sexes have reported very favourably on their experience of it. There’s a lot of important information but also a lot of laughter and active discussion – any questions are happily answered in detail.
